SIZE AND TYPE OF ORGANIZATION

Kern River Gas Transmission Company is a subsidiary of MidAmerican Energy Holdings Company. MidAmerican is a privately owned global provider of energy services and provides electric and natural gas service to five million customers worldwide.

Kern River owns and operates a 1,679-mile interstate natural gas pipeline between southwestern Wyoming and Southern California. Kern River currently delivers more than 1.7 billion cubic feet per day of natural gas to markets in Utah, Nevada, and California.

Project Description

The 2003 Expansion Project involved the construction of a new 717-mile, natural gas pipeline (36”/42” diameters) along the existing Kern River System from Wyoming to California. The $1.2 billion Project more than doubled the amount of natural gas transported on the Kern River system.

The Project involved acquisition of ROW across four states (Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, & California) across over 2,000 parcels and the acquisition of permits and entitlements from 47 jurisdictional agencies at the local, state and federal levels including the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and the Bureau of Land Management in addition to NEPA and CEQA compliance.

The above ground facilities included construction of three new compressor stations. The Project was completed on schedule and 5% under budget for land & acquisition costs.

The High Desert Pipeline Project involved a lateral pipeline from the Kern River main line to the new High Desert Power Plant in Victorville, CA.
